Venice calling

For my hubby's birthday, I offered him a weekend to Venice, the most romantic city in the entire world <3

^ Hubby trying to guess what his gift was ;)

On a Friday night at the end of February, we hopped on a plane and arrived in Venice just in time for dinner.

We made a beeline for Osteria al Portego, a traditional bacaro with a restaurant side as well.

If you're asking what a bacaro is, it's a typical venetian tavern where you usually find lots of good wines and super yummy finger food - in Venice they called it cicheti. You can go there for a quick snack during the day and of course for aperitif.

Some also have a proper restaurant side while others only offer drinks & cicheti and sometimes the places are so tiny that you cannot even sit.

It's very typical in Venice and if you're there you cannot miss to try a couple of them! Which of course we did and Osteria al Portego turned out to be our favorite one, we even came back on our last night in Venice!

While waiting for our table, we celebrated us being in Venice with prosecco & chicheti.

And trust me when I say that to choose which cicheti to order is not an easy task...

We then continued with a seafood based dinner - obviously in Venice there's a lot of seafood. One of the most traditional Venetian dishes is the creamed cod (baccala mantecato).

For not missing anything we took the trio of cod : creamed cod (of course!), cod & polenta & cod with onions. It was super yummy. If you go to Osteria al Portego  - and you should go! -you must try the trio of baccalà!

We also shared octopus & polenta which was good but less original.

After dinner, we walked to our home for the week-end, the Hotel Santa Marina which was really good & very centrally located in between Rialto bridge and San Marco square, although the staff wasn't particularly friendly.

We had a room in the annex building & I must say I was a bit worried as I read on tripadvisor bad comments about the annex building, especially about the noise, but we actually didn't have any problem. Our room was quite & nicely decorated, in the opulent Venetian style, as well as the whole building...

... & we discovered a nice view over Venice roofs in the morning :)

After a huge salty & sweet breakfast & despite an annoying rain, we were finally ready to explore the city.

Obviously starting with San Marco square & Cathedral!

But I'll tell you more about that tomorrow (I have too many pics ;p ).
