Venice : Murano & Burano

Burano, Venice, Italy

We begun our last day in Venise with a trip to the islands of Murano & Burano.

Our hôtel, Hotel Santa Marina, offered a free taxi to bring hosts to Murano to visit a glass factory. Which was very nice: we went to Murano with an elegant private boat and visited the factory without a crowd of tourists.

The boat ride to go to Murano was lovely itself.

Don’t hesitate to ask the hotel staff about this service as they won’t offer it to you spontaneously (I read about it on tripadvisor).

Murano, Venice, Italy - Glass Factory

Glass-blower is a very old craft, there are no school for it and the savoir faire is transmitted from father to son. It takes almost 15 years to become a good glass-blower!
It’s so amazing to see how they work the glass…

They put the glass in an oven to heat it (ovens are working continuously and never switched off)...

...and then there are 2 techniques : if they’re creating an object with a cavity (e.g. a vase) they blow into the glass otherwise they work the glass to create the shape they want, and in this case they have a very short time before the glass cool down too much to be shaped.

Even though the glass cool down too much that it cannot be worked anymore, it remains very hot, proof is that if you put a piece of paper over it, it bursts into flames!

It was very interesting to watch the artisan at work. After that, we had time to admire all the glass pieces exposed in the gallery (no photo were allowed) but there were some beautiful – and totally overpriced – pieces !

We therefor left the factory empty handed, and took a stroll among the little streets of Murano…

Walking around, I even found the perfect little boat for me : a pink one!

…Before taking the ferry to Burano. Burano is especially known for its lace, but also its colorful houses... The place is so beautiful !

After this charming interval, we came back to Venice. But I'll tell you more about our last afternoon in Venice tomorrow as this post is already overpacked with pics ;) but I couldn't resist, all those houses were just too cute, I couldn't get enough!

  1. We loved Burano! It's so colourful, relaxed and friendly. We went to Murano too but felt rushed through the glass factory and didn't enjoy it quite as much. Lovely photos! #CityTripping

    1. I prefer Burano too, it's such a cute town!!
We liked Murano as well, I think we've been really lucky as we had like a private visit of the glass factory (just for us & some people from our hotel) so we learnt many things & had plenty of time to visit, but then when we were wandering around we saw other glass factories full of people indeed..
      Have good day! :)

But Murano is where the glass factories are, the island with the colorful houses is Burano ;)
      Have a nice day!

  4. Burano looks stunning - I haven't made it to either during my visits to Venice but I think I could just wandering around all day taking photos. How lovely to have a private tour of the glass blowing as well. Thanks for linking up with #citytripping

  7. I have always wanted to visit Burano to replace a diary I bought in Venice on my honeymoon but that was then stolen :( It had a beautiful glass insert on the front. Your pictures really show off how colourful it is. Looking forward to hearing about the rest of Venice!

    1. Oh how a pity your diary was stolen! It's so annoying when an object that is a memory of a special place & special moment gets stolen or lost! Especially if you cannot go back to replace it easily! Hope you'll have another trip to Venice to replace it, visit Burano & enjoy the magical place! ;)
      Have a beautiful day!

  8. I love how you explain all of the work that goes into glass making and then say that the pieces in the shop were "overpriced". Granted I don't know what the cost was, but I found that kind of funny. Are you _sure_ those pieces were over priced?

It looks like your time in Burano was wet and rainy, but it doesn't look like that kept you from having fun! Did you get to see any of the shopkeepers making lace?

    1. Ahah! Maybe you're right ;) but honestly, I was not excepting glass object to cost like industrial items, I know they're handmade & with a difficult technique... but still, they were really expensive! ;p

In Burano there was no one making lace... Maybe this tradition is going lost, as I only see one or two lace shops at the entrance of the town (but they were just selling, not making) & that's all...
I went there when I was a kid & I remembered much more lace in Burano..
